Common PSLE Chinese Oral Conversation Questions: A Parent's Guide
The Stimulus-Based Conversation (看录像会话) component is worth 30 marks and requires students to engage in a conversation with the examiner based on a short video. Understanding the typical question patterns and how to structure responses is key to success.
The 3-Question Pattern
After watching a 1-minute video stimulus and 10 minutes of preparation, students will typically face three guiding questions from the examiner:
- Video Content: Questions directly related to the events, characters, or setting depicted in the video.
- Student's Reflections: Questions prompting the student to share their personal thoughts, feelings, or opinions about the theme presented in the video.
- Broader Societal Context: Questions encouraging the student to relate the video's theme to wider societal issues, personal experiences, or general knowledge.
The P.E.E.L. Framework for Structured Answers
To provide detailed, structured, and insightful responses, the P.E.E.L. method is highly recommended:
- Point (观点): Start by stating your core viewpoint clearly and directly.
- Explain (说明): Elaborate on your point, providing reasons and additional details.
- Example (例子): Provide specific examples that are related to your point. These can be from the video, personal experiences, or general observations.
- Link (总结): Tie your response back to the main theme or question, or offer a concluding thought.

- Point: 我认为学校扮演重要的角色。(I believe that schools play an important role.)
- Explain: 学校可以举办相关的活动。(Schools can organise activities that encourage students to care for and support others.)
- Example: 比如组织学生参与社区服务、慈善义卖或分组合作学习。(For example, students can be involved in community service projects, charity fundraising activities, or group-based collaborative learning tasks.)
- Link: 学生能够在活动中体会到帮助别人的快乐,培养友爱互助的精神。(Through these activities, students can experience the joy of helping others and gradually develop a strong sense of friendship and mutual support.)
Expert Tips and Practical Advice for Parents
- Simulate Exam Conditions: Practice with a tutor or family member, or record your child reading and speaking to build confidence and identify areas for improvement. This helps them get comfortable with the pressure of the exam.
- Stay Updated on Current Events: Discuss broader topics like environmental issues, cultural trends, or community initiatives. This helps students engage confidently with examiners on a variety of themes.
- Practice Regularly: Consistent reading aloud, engaging in Chinese conversations, and expanding vocabulary are crucial. Reading Chinese books and articles can improve comprehension and language proficiency.
- Focus on Pronunciation and Intonation: Pay close attention to tones and accurate pronunciation, as incorrect tones can alter word meanings and affect clarity.
- Work on Body Language: Encourage maintaining eye contact, smiling naturally, and using positive body language to appear confident and engaged during the conversation.
- Avoid Common Mistakes: Remind your child to avoid lack of emotion, flat or incomplete responses, disorganised thoughts, and inadequate preparation for common topics. Encourage elaboration beyond simple descriptions.
